ELEVEN

“Hold on,” Rachel said. She picked up a piece from a broken pot, then threw it at the stairs.

It clinked down the stone steps, but nothing happened.

“Okay, we’re good.”

After putting some more broken pieces in the doorway in an attempt to prevent it from closing on us, we took the stairs. They went down straight for a few steps, then began circling until we were facing the opposite direction, toward the yard. A long stone hallway came next, drenched in complete darkness.

“Greenie,” I said. “Into the wall.”

Greenie woofed and jumped into the wall.

I gave the other two a thumbs-up. “Good to go.” If Greenie could get out, he could get in and save us in case we got trapped.

Marta took the lead again, illuminating the dark gray stone walls with her phone flashlight.

“We gotta be beyond the yard and under the forest,” Rachel commented after about a minute.

“The Fae’s secret bedroom, I bet.” Fae did love nature.

Marta shushed us. “I think there’s light coming from ahead.”

She turned off the flashlight, and a soft light took its place at the end of the tunnel. There we found another set of stairs, which opened into a large combination of a cave and a room.

Shafts of sunlight speared into the gloom, coming from openings in the ceiling—some too rectangular to be natural, but others dripping soil and green growth. The room itself had a rectangular shape, with the same brown bricks as the main house framing random rock outcrops. Tree roots crawled over the bricks in a way that reminded me of Lord Velei’s mansion, but where Lord Velei’s were gleaming and polished, these kept nature’s rawness all over them.

A series of statues on waist-high pedestals formed a line down each long side of the room, some missing an arm or shoulder, others broken in half, their tops lying abandoned nearby on the stone floor. Leaves and twigs crunched as we walked deeper into the room, and faint forest sounds drifted in from above.

“What is this place?” Rachel asked.

“Not a bedroom,” Marta said.

“Some sort of Fae shrine?” I crouched to study one of the broken statues. It represented a young woman in a simple sleeveless dress. “But why the statues?” The Fae didn’t believe in gods, as far as I knew, only in magic. “Perhaps these are meant to represent nature?”

“Or maybe he liked statues,” Rachel said.

“I’ve never seen statues like this in Faerie.”

“Maybe that’s why he came to the surface, then. Felt misunderstood back home.”

Marta made a thoughtful sound. “A private sanctuary.”

I straightened and joined her in the middle of the room. “Some sort of Fae office.”

“Yes.”

“That makes sense,” Rachel said, coming to stand by our side. “Chances are high the map is here, then.” She licked her lips. “Let’s search.”

We each took one wall, but it only took me a few steps toward the far one to know where the map was.

“Over here,” I called excitedly, pointing at the center of the far wall. Unlike the other two, this was more like smooth rock than brick.
